Kartchner Caverns Volunteer Appreciation Picnic

Our final day at Kartchner Caverns is today. I have to say, I’m going to miss this place with it’s wonderful vistas, ever-changing weather and most of all it’s fine group of volunteers. With the strain in the Arizona State Parks budget, it’s the volunteers that keep this place open. The paid staff of rangers is just a fraction of the working population here. Volunteers are involved with every job from electrician to tour guide, campground host to office secretary. There must be nearly three quarters or more of the staff who are volunteers and who live on the acreage surrounding the caverns. I was lucky enough to be one of them.

Note: During my stay I was NOT fortunate enough to shoot a 360 degree panorama, or for that matter, any images inside the caverns.  I had also hoped to create several 3D images of the some of the cavern formations. I knew I would not be permitted to post the images on this blog but they might be posted on the Friends of Kartchner and the Kartcher State Park websites. None of my repeated requests was acknowledged by the state park officials and the Phoenix, Arizona State Park Headquarters didn’t acknowledge any of my emails. That was disappointing. The Friends of Kartchner Caverns also didn’t reply. I believe the more people can see of this natural wonder, the more they would want to visit the caverns in person.

We leave Katchner for a stay in Phoenix, AZ to do our annual motor home maintenance and change out the TranSynd (synthetic transmission fluid) in the Allison transmission. Also, the slide awning which got mangled by the wind last December will be dealt with. From Phoenix we head north to Zion National Park for our fourth season.
