For Blue, today was supposed to be a fun day of play, followed by a bath (no so fun for Blue) and nail clipping (really!! not so fun for Blue or me) BUT… it turned out to be the most un-fun day of all for both of us…a trip to the doctor followed by a medicine chaser!![]()
It’s not to be taken lightly. Giardia can kill a dog. How Blue came down with it is a mystery but I suspect it was something he picked up during one of our daily walks. We’re surrounded by Virgin River water, known for harboring Giardia. Deer and all sorts of wildlife which could easily be carrying this protozoa in their gut are all around us. The symptoms have been appearing for the last 3 days and I never suspected what it might be. Blue was “running” from both ends and there was blood present in his efforts. Enough said…something needed to be done, so we headed for the nearest Vet to be found in Hurricane, UT.

Sitting in the front seat outside the Desert Vet in Hurricane, Blue is happy as can be expected that his undignified visit is over.
Blue is now on a special diet for at least 3 days and medication twice a day for 7 days. I’m hoping this will work and that we caught this “bug” in time to prevent complications. Blue is happily resting on the back of the couch and the medicine is staying inside him. We’ll know more during the next 48 hours.
At the recommendation of another local vet I should squirt Pediatric Electrolyte solution in Blue’s mouth with an syringe every 15 minutes or so. OK, so I tried it, but with an inexpensive baby bottle and a quart of this solution. Frankly, I thought this was a little silly BUT guess what, Blue really likes this idea. Needless to say, I hope he gets well soon. ![]()
