I often reflect on how lucky I am living in this canyon, even if only temporarily. During eight stays I’ve enjoyed the privilege of living here during all four seasons. Few experience this. Most park rangers and park workers commute from nearby towns every morning. They go home each evening missing the sound of night crickets and the torch lit eyes of resting deer and grey foxes scurrying about the Visitor Center parking lot and the nightly rush of wind whipping the leaves until the morning sunlight hits them. The wind is a welcome song in the night starting around 10pm and lasting til 9am. When this pattern changes it signals a weather change is about to come. Today is one of those days…the weather is changing and the nights are getting cold. The deer are here in numbers eating everything they can find before winter.
Soon the leaves will be on the ground and “The Watchman” will be in full view out Blue’s favorite window.
